From the late medieval period there was strong belief in the damage that witches could bring to households, especially in rural areas. With rural populations in the mid 16th - 18th centuries being largely illiterate, inscribing a mark or symbol somewhere in the house was thought to bring protection. The speaker explores the different types that have been discovered from feint scratch marks to old shoes.
