Superstitions and Old Witchmarks

Meeting time

The talk will be preceded by the AGM.

Speaker: Denny Robbins

From the late medieval period there was strong belief in the damage that witches could bring to households, especially in rural areas.  With rural populations in the mid 16th - 18th centuries being largely illiterate, inscribing a mark or symbol somewhere in the house was thought to bring protection.  The speaker explores the different types that have been discovered from feint scratch marks to old shoes.
