GRANTS â€“ As most people who come to our events know, profits we generate are used to fund good causes in the village. If you represent a village group and have a specific project in need of support, please get in touch. We may be able to help.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Saturday 15th July 3pm to 5pm -  Cream Tea at the church. This was very popular last year and if the weather is good, we will set up tables in the churchyard. Join us for scones, cakes and as much tea/coffee as you can drink.

Saturday 9th September 3pm to 9pm -  The Church That Rocks 2. Plans are well under way now for your favourite outdoor music event of the year. Make sure it’s in your diary.

Saturday 7th October 9am to 12 noon – The Big Harvest Breakfast. in the church

Friday 8th December â€“ Wreath-making evening in the village hall, with Prosecco and puddings.

Sunday 24th December 5:30pm – Outdoor Carol Service in front of the church.

Bradford Abbas Variety Club

The Variety Club are delighted to announce that after this year’s successful show a sum of £1800 was donated to various village organisations.

Special thanks go to Bradford Abbas Pre-School and St Mary’s School PTA for supporting with Front of House duties, other donations were given to St Mary’s Church Fabric Fund, Bradford Abbas Friendship Club, Village Hall and Sports and Social Club to support their various activities.

Thank you to everyone that came along to support the show and for the kind words of encouragement and praise, it means a lot to us.

We trialled a matinee performance this year, and will continue with this offering next year. Dates for next year’s show will be published in due course.

The committee members would also like to extend their thanks to all the cast, crew and friends of the Variety Club. Without you, it couldn’t be done.

If you’d like to join the club, help with the show, get on stage, write a sketch, the list is endless….  then please come along to our AGM.

It will be held at Bradford Abbas Sports and Social Club on Wednesday 4th October at 7.30pm.

 

Mill Farm Events

  • Hugh! The musical is coming to Mill Farm on June 30th. Make sure to grab tickets for this hilarious two-woman, ‘fringe-style’ musical from millfarmdorset.com/events.
  • July 29th 11.00am – 10.30pm, sees the return of the Mill Farm Party, our brilliant one-day festival celebrating another year of Mill Farm Music and the brilliant clients we have worked with, with headliner The Entitled Sons. Tickets available from millfarmdorset.com/events/millfarmparty2023.

70s Charity Evening

Not long to go now until the 70s evening for Parkinson’s UK on the 22nd July at Bradford Abbas Sports Club. 

Fantastic raffle and silent auction prizes. 

Please make sure to buy your tickets in advance (£12 includes your main and pudding).

Pop-up Market

A huge thank you to everyone who's supported the pop-up monthly market since we started back in February. We generally have about 4 to 8 stalls, including local meat, jams, chutneys and honey, cards and gifts, and cakes. In July we have a knife sharpener and hopefully Bodyshop.

16 December

We run from 11am until 1 pm, in the village hall. Why not have a coffee and a natter in the church first?

The Blackmore Vale Scribes

The Blackmore Vale Scribes, a hobby calligraphy group that meets monthly in Bradford Abbas Village Hall, is holding an Exhibition of their work in the Lady Chapel at Sherborne Abbey from 11th - 24th July.

 

Mixed Ability Yoga

Saturday morning yoga continues throughout summer at Bradford Abbas Village Hall on Saturday mornings from 9.15am--10.15am. So come along and join us! These are friendly and fun classes, suitable for most. Start your weekend with movement and relaxation. £8.50 per session. 

July dates - 1st / 8th/ 15th / 22nd* / 29th  (22nd July class runs  8.45am-9.45am)

August dates - 5th / 19th / 26th

Bradford Abbas History Society - Summer Outings

Our July meeting is on the 25th July Tuesday afternoon (ONLY) at 14.00 hrs. Visit and Guided History tour of Sherborne Boy’s School by kind invitation of Rachel Hassall, the School’s Archivist. 

We ask for a £3 donation per person for historical good causes. The numbers are limited to a Maximum of 20 visitors. Please Book with Tony White at Wisteria Cottage or ring 01935 424441.

 

Bradford Abbas Petanque Group


What a glorious day we had on Sunday 11th June.  An age range from 3 to nearly 90, all abilities and we all had a lovely time.  So good a time was had by all that we are hoping to repeat it on:

The Wednesday 11.00 group continues to grow very happily and Thursday 2.00 offers a warm welcome to all.

Bradford Abbas Women’s Institute

Bradford Abbas WI is one of the oldest in the world, quite a remarkable achievement from this small village. We are very proud of this heritage and continuously strive to keep our little group going.
Tuesday 18th July 7.30pm in The Village Hall, it is our 106th birthday party. To mark the celebration we have a guest speaker… Ian Williams and the subject is The Silk Road, connecting East & West since ancient times. Sounds interesting…. There will of course also be cake!!
All ladies and girls are invited to come along and join in with our friendly welcoming Women’s Institute.

The Friendship Club

The Friendship Club meets on the first Tuesday afternoon of the month at 2.00pm at Bradford Abbas Sports and Social Club. There is Bingo, a draw, tea and biscuits and a chance to have a chat and laugh with fellow villagers, new members are welcome. 

 

Monday Night Bingo

Every Monday at 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.15pm at Bradford Abbas Sports and Social Club.

Everyone 18 and over are welcome to our weekly light-hearted evening which also includes a small draw with a chance to win the SNOW BALL and of course a laugh and chat. We finish just before 9pm.

 

Yeovil Railway Centre

  • Sunday 2 July:  Steam Train Day with Peckett 0-4-0 Pectin.  Come and have a spin on our turntable! Train rides start at 11am with a break for lunch, last ride at 3.30pm.  All the usual attractions available, see our Facebook page or web site for details.
  • Sunday 9 July: Main Line Steam, Merchant Navy Class 35018 British India Line detaches for servicing, the train continues to Weymouth diesel hauled.  35018 follows later.
  • Tuesday 25 July: Diesel Train Day with one of our diesel engines hauling a historic brakevan.  The gates open at 10.30am, first ride at 11am then regularly (with a lunch break) until the final ride at 2.40pm. Adults £6, child 5–15 £3 with one child free per paying adult.  Child under 5 free.
  • Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 July:  Our popular Train and Tractor Day is now a two-day event with a display of Tractors, Land Rovers, and static engines.  Also visiting us is the Southern Armour Group with their large-scale model tanks and other vehicles.  There will be a lot going on. We will use Peckett Pectin to transport you down to the Wilderness Halt to see the exhibits (and bring you back again!). The miniature railway will be in operation, the shop on platform 3 open, refreshments available. Admission adults £12.10 with gift aid, otherwise £11, children £6.05 with gift aid otherwise £5.50, (one child 5-15 free with a full paying adult), children under 5 and members free.

EVENTS:

SUNDAY 9TH JULY 1pm to 4pm – CHURCHYARD VOLUNTEERS DAY

You may have noticed how parts of our churchyard have become overgrown. We are inviting anybody with an interest in keeping it in good condition to give a few hours to help. Please bring your secateurs, cordless mowers / strimmers, a bag to take away cuttings and any other tools you think might be useful. We will provide refreshments to keep you going. Please tell your friends and encourage them to join us too.

FRIDAY 14TH JULY 6pm to 8pm – BASTILLE DAY BASH

Brian and Lucy Lock are hosting a French-themed evening to raise funds for the church, taking place at Silverlake House (half-way between B.A. and Sherborne). Come and enjoy wine, French bread, French music and celebrate all things French. There will also be games, a quiz and a raffle. Tickets are £10 and can be obtained from Lucy and Brian, Gary Siggins or Alan Fall. Your ticket price includes food and your first drink.

Dress code – anything, avec a little French flair.

 SATURDAY 15TH JULY 3pm to 5pm – CREAM TEA

Join us for scones, cake and as much tea/coffee as you can drink.

SATURDAY 22ND JULY 9:30 to 11:30 – BIG CHURCH CLEAN-UP

Back in April, some of us got together to give the church a spring clean. It is now due for a summer clean. If you can give an hour or so to help, please come along.

On weekends when we are without a service in Bradford Abbas, we encourage villagers to join a service at Thornford or Beer Hackett. Details are posted on the notice boards outside the church. One of these will be of particular interest if you would like to go to a sung service:
