Ultrafast Broadband
Ultrafast Broadband Could Be Coming to Bradford Abbas!
During September, a number of people in Bradford Abbas received a card inviting them to pledge their "Gigabit Voucher" to Openreach. This relates to a Government scheme to allow developers to put the fastest broadband into rural communities like ours. If you already have a fibre connection but would like it to be even better (to improve video streaming and download and upload speeds etc) then you should consider adding your name. For every household that completes the registration, the Government will pay ÂŁ1500 to the developer (in this case Openreach) to fund the upgraded infrastructure. But it needs quite a lot of us to take part or the funding target will not be met.
Visit this webpage www.openreach.com/connect-my-community, scroll down and click the button marked “Check if you’re eligible” and follow the instructions. Openreach say their fibre network is available to all broadband suppliers, so once the network is upgraded we won't be committed to sign up with a specific provider. Why not take five minutes and join in?
The Post Office is open in the village hall Tuesdays & Thursdays 1300 to 1600.
Gardeners’ Club Owing to the Covid-19 restrictions we will be unable to resume our meetings for the rest of this year.
Bradford Abbas History Society With completion delayed by the coronavirus lockdown, the History Society has recently been pleased to give two half-size Interpretation Boards (smaller copies of the one next to the War Memorial) to St Mary’s School and to the Village Hall. The boards describe the long history and heritage of our village showing historic buildings and areas of significant historical interest. The extra boards will make the information more directly available to the school children and visitors to the village hall (when, it’s to be hoped, we can one day regain access to it) and were part of the original project initiated and carried through by the late Derek Hayward.

NEWS FROM THE SHOP
Well…
What a result of the petition: only half of the people who originally wanted the premises to remain as a shop, have voted to keep the shop!
We thank you from the bottom of hearts to all our loyal and valued customers who voted for us to stay. As you all know, it’s now on the market for sale, but after 3 weeks we’ve had no enquiries at all.
Our landlord is not giving us any grace to help us, especially now that our trade is back to losing money each week. As many of you will know, he has not helped at any time during our time here.
What happens next?
If the shop were made larger (as we had intended, but consent would be needed etc) and became a larger stockist and even took on the Post Office – it would make it, and as I have said many times before, if only the village would buy it, it would survive and thrive!
We will be moving on and will be putting a sign up when leaving, though not necessarily closing?
So thank you again to all our customers and the most amazing people we have met and certainly the even more amazing people who have given up their time for free to help us.
Best Wishes
Alan and Wendy

Items from the Parish Council
-
Feel free to stop by the Playing Fields to see the new cable runway installed in September. The previous cable runway was no longer fit for purpose and with funds saved over many years it was time to replace it for safety reasons. Have fun! (socially distanced, of course)
-
Thank you to Michele Bacchus for resurrecting the Pennant after lockdown, we are sorry to see you go and wish you all the best
-
The press and public are welcome to listen in and ask questions at the virtual parish council meetings. If you wish to attend a meeting please register with zoom.us and then obtain the meeting i.d. and password from the agenda posted for the meeting on the website (http://bradford-abbas.uk/) or noticeboards. It is still possible to join in without internet access - please contact the Clerk for more details on 473 833.
ST MARY’S WEEK 2020
Well, that was fun! We’ve received lots of very positive feedback from those who came along on Saturday 12thSeptember to THE CHURCH THAT ROCKS...OUTDOORS. Special thanks go to the performers Peter Littlewood, Who Let The Ducks Out and The Musaic who entertained us throughout the day and into the evening. If you were in the audience, your generosity and willingness to purchase drinks have ensured that this year’s defibrillator costs have been covered.
We are already bending our minds to what we might be able to do this winter. And we are fairly confident that (rules permitting) we will back in the playing field for The Church That Rocks 2021. Look out for posters and Facebook announcements.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting
11.30am, St Mary’s Church, Bradford Abbas, Sunday 18th October 2020
The church’s annual meeting (known as the APCM) is open to all parishioners. This year’s meeting was postponed from Spring when it is normally held due to lockdown rules. The current rules allow for us to meet in the church provided we respect social distancing and take sensible precautions (face coverings, hand sanitiser, etc). This year our churchwarden Valerie Holdsworth and treasurer Sue Drayton are stepping down from their posts.
If you (or anybody you know) might be interested in helping the church by stepping into one of these positions, please contact Rev Tony Gilbert or the PCC secretary Gary Siggins ahead of the meeting.
We hope that as many of you as possible will come along.

60 Diamond Years for Brian and Angy Haigh!
Congratulations to Brian and Angy Haigh, who celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary this month (15 October)
Brian and Angy moved to Bradford Abbas 57 years ago, with their newborn daughter, Rhiannon, and Catto the cat, during one of the coldest winters on record. Daughter Sophie followed a couple of years later, and now they also treasure their grandsons Tom (26) and Will (18).
W hile Covid-19 restrictions mean they can’t celebrate in the way that they might otherwise have done so, we hope you’ll join us in sending best wishes and many congratulations on their long and happy marriage!
